Kate Winslet has proven to be one of the most impressive actresses of her era, and she even has an Oscar to show for it!

Sugar Puffs gave her her first acting job

All stars have to start somewhere, right? Winslet credits her first acting job as dancing with the Honey Monster in a TV advertisement for Sugar Puffs cereal.

She was predicted to be typecast after her big break

Peter Jackson’s Heavenly Creatures (1995) gained a young Winslet critical acclaim and she was a standout performance. However, not everyone believed this was going to lead to a long and prosperous career.
A reviewer of the film predicted that the young star would be typecast to this character and would never go on to be a big star. Well…we hope this reviewer saw Titanic and also happened to notice the winner for Best Actress at 2008’s Academy Awards.

Was considered for Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001), The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002) and Mary Shelley’s Frankestein (1994)

Like many high-profile stars, there have been near misses in some big hits. In Winslet’s case, she was very close to the title role in Bridget Jones’s Diary, the love interest in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and a noblewoman in the second LOTR film. Of course, Renée Zellweger, Miranda Otto and Helena Bonham Carter won the roles respectively.
Extra fun fact: Frankenstein’s director/star Kenneth Branagh was so impressed with Winslet that he offered her the role of Ophelia his next film, Hamlet (1996).
Her favourite performance of her own is in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)

Its always a surprise when a star reveals their favourite performance of theirs, right? In the case of Kate Winslet, hers is Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
The film has Winslet alongside Jim Carrey as they play a couple who go through a procedure to wipe each other from their memories. The film’s line-up also includes the MCU’s Mark Ruffalo and Spider-Man’s Kirsten Dunst.

Yes, that’s right. Before Alex Kingston stepped into the role that had her locking lips with three different incarnations of the Time Lord, Winslet was the top choice.
Of course, she was either unavailable or wasn’t’ looking to step into TV at that point in her career. In a way, thank god! Kingston was a scene stealer. But oh, what could have been!
