Top 5 Star Wars spin-off movies that need to be made
I’ve got a good feeling about these!
It is fair to say that Star Wars spin-off films can be hit or miss; Rogue One proved to be an absolute hit whilst whilst Solo has divided fans right down the middle. Having said that, we’re in for more Star Wars than we anticipated.
The fact that Ryan Johnson (director of the Skywalker saga nerf-herder, The Last Jedi) is creating a trilogy of films that are believed to take us to a part of the Star Wars universe we’ve never seen before, it gives us hope that Disney are looking to expand further on their ownership of Lucasfilm’s prized franchise. With that in mind, us hardcore fans of a galaxy far, far away are gunning for some great films in the future. Let’s take a look at the Star Wars spin-offs we could get and really be invested in.
Palpatine’s Origin

Even though he is regarded as the ultimate big bag of the galaxy, we know very little about Sheev Palpatine. His backstory is explored in the expanded comics, a screen adaptation is what would give a completely new angle to Star Wars.
Palpatine is a through and through evil individual. To make him the centre of his own film would mean creating a story about how a bad guy becomes an evil guy. Some elements of Palpatine’s backstory from the comics would work amazingly:
- His upbringing with a wealthy family.
- His organic greed for power.
- His scheming to overthrow his own master once he has gained all of the knowledge he offers.
A lot of films about villains (for example Disney’s Maleficent and Warner Bros. Joker) make us sympathise with them and see their journey from their point of view. This would not be a film with the message ‘we get why he’s become this, poor him’, it would be more about ‘wow this guy is ruthless, i hate him more than before’.
Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss are in line to bring a Star Wars spin-off to the big screen in 2022 – would this not be the perfect fit for them? Think in line with a film about Littlefinger but he’s a lot more ruthless, more calculating and actually (in a way) wins by the film’s end.
Kenobi’s Exile

As one of the most iconic characters in Star Wars mythology, it is about time that Obi-Wan/Ben Kenobi got himself a spin-off. Many fans say they’d love to see a film that gives insight to Kenobi’s training with Qui-Got Jinn, whilst others (such as this fan right here) are gunning for a film which sees Kenobi whilst in exile between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, watching over a young Luke Skywalker.
Not only would be cool to see a slightly aged version of Mr ‘Hello There’ with Ewan McGregor, but it opens up a whole narrative, such as:
- Obi-Wan’s reputation on Tatooine as a ‘strange old hermit’.
- His commitment to staying out of sight and watching over Luke.
- His feud with Owen Lars, Luke’s uncle.
An adventure that sees Kenobi being pulled into…well, an adventure…whilst desperately wanting to get back to solitude and watching over Luke could serve as a new look at out favourite jedi master.
Lando’s Hustling Days

There is no doubt that Donald Glover’s Lando Calrissian was one of the few highlights of Solo: A Star Wars Story. So much so that maybe he deserves a film where we get to see him take centre stage?
When we see Lando last in the timeline, Han Solo has won his beloved Millennium Falcon. After that? A high-end administrator in Cloud City. It would be cool to see Lando climb all the way back to the top using his charm and forward-thinking whilst some of his enemies are in pursuit. Think Catch Me If You Can in space and with more intergalactic bounty hunters (there’s intergalactic bounty hunters in Catch Me If You Can, right?).
Of course, this Star-Wars spin-off would need the returning of Donald Glover. I won’t take no for an answer.
Leia & The Rebellion

We pretty much assume that Leia was brought up in the fight against the Empire, but what if there was more to it? That would give our favourite Disney princess (she technically is one now) an interesting arc.
Leia is portrayed as woman of royalty who is pretty handy with a blaster, but would her adoptive father, Bail Organa, allow her to get caught up in the fight so easily? Watching Leia earn respect in her own right and prove that she’s a Skywalker at heart would be a perfect origin for her. Also, it’s a chance to honour the magnificant Carrie Fisher who sadly passed away in 2016.
Boba Fett’s Rise Through The Hutt Ranks

This is the spin-off film that has been rattling around for a few years now. Boba Fett, we discover in Attack of the Clones, was left without a family or home on the planet Kamino when Mace Windu beheaded his father, Jango Fett.
Stealing his father’s suit and wearing it as he becomes a fearful bounty hunter in the Outer Rim Territory, Fett would be a cool action star before you know it. Earning a place in Jabba the Hutt’s inner circle and doing whatever he must for a few credits, this is a small time character we would enjoy watching.
Sure, he gets a pretty pathetic death in Return of the Jedi, but why not give the bounty with daddy issues have a chance to reclaim some favour amongst fans?
Although a Star Wars spin-off is greeting us in 2022 at the earliest, there is so much potential from the characters we love to take centre stage. It wouldn’t surprise me if Kathleen Kennedy and co. wanted to start focusing more on wider parts of the Star Wars universe, just like Rain Johnson, but we do know that the character’s we are familiar with could also be worthy of a spin-off.
Until then, we still have The Rise of Skywalker to look forward to, with the first trailer being viewable and analysed all the way up to its December 2019 release.
The Rise of Skywalker hits UK cinemas December 19 and US cinemas December 20.

Your point of view caught my eye and was very interesting. Thanks. I have a question for you.
