First trailer and title for Star Wars Episode IX released
“No one’s ever really gone.”
It was Star Wars Celebration and we had no solid information about the newest and final film in the main Star Wars film series: Star Wars Episode IX. What else did we expect?
Yes, J.J Abrams and co dropped the first trailer for the Star Wars Celebration audience, also revealing the film’s title.
Check out the trailer and the title reveal below:
Yes, so the film is officially titled ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker‘, and what a trailer, eh? We see a hell of a lot and we get so much to theorise over until December. We see Rey with a lightsaber, the return of Billy Dee Willams’ Lando Calrissian, magical footage of Carrie Fisher’s Princess Leia and surprise return that really rocked the room: the return of Sheev Palpatine – Darth Sidious.

We will elaborate more on these points and more with our trailer breakdown, but we have quite an exciting year ahead of us now.
Star Wars Episode IX, or shall we say The Rise of Skywalker now, was under fire at one point thanks to the departure of original director Colin Trevorrow due to creative differences. This led Kathleen Kennedy and the rest of Lucasfilm/Disney to bringing back J.J Abrams who brought Star Wars back for a new generation of fans with The Force Awakens in 2015.
Other bumps in the road have of course included the unfortunate passing of original cast member Carrie Fisher, who left us just one year before The Last Jedi‘s release, however she had finished filming. Fisher’s character was set to be front and centre for the ninth instalment of the Skywalker Saga, with Harrison Ford’s Han Solo being centre stage for Episode Seven and Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker being the main attention of Episode Eight. Thankfully, with today’s technology, unused footage will be used to bring Leia back in some form for The Rise of Skywalker.

Rest assured, with Sci-Fi savvy Abrams at the helm, all is sure to be done properly – we’re looking at your Rian Johnson.
The official premise for Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker reads: “A year after The Last Jedi, the battered remnants of the Resistance escaped the retribution of the First Order, some of its surviving major members embark on one final journey, where they will inevitably confront what may be the greatest evil ever known in the galaxy, bringing the Skywalker saga to a climactic close.”
The Rise of Skywalker is due to sky into cinemas December 19 in the UK, December 20 in the US.
