The Biggest Questions Heading Into This is Us Season 5

There’s still more to unpack about the past, present and future of the Pearson family

This is Us is highly regarded for its twists and turns. And, with each plot twist comes more and more questions. As hard as Covid-19 has tried, it didn’t stop Season 5 start filming just a couple of weeks ago.

A two-hour premiere is due to air October 27, and so we have compiled the biggest enigmas from the show so far. Read on…

Will kate make it out alive?

For the last few seasons, we have been drip fed moments from a night way into the future where everyone is gathering to see an elderly (and dying?) Rebecca. So far, we’ve seen everyone from the main cast making an appearance. All except one: Kate. We’ve seen an older Toby in bed by himself – no wedding ring and being reluctant to go to said gathering. In a separate flash forward we’ve seen Kate and Toby’s son, Jack, embracing music over the course of his life. This montage shows Kate with him but then she suddenly stops showing up as Jack gets older.

This all indicates that Katie girl isn’t going to be alive when everyone gathers to see Rebecca. With writer Dan Fogelman steering the ship of This is Us, it is possible that these are all red herrings. However, with this much detail, plus the heartache that the show is known to cause, it’s not impossible.

Will Kate and Toby split?

Leading on, even if Kate is still kicking years into the future, Toby still isn’t wearing his wedding ring. Kate and Toby have dealt with their ups and downs since Season 1. Is it possible that at some point they call it quits?

During the flash forward, Randall calls Toby and asks him to come meet him and the family. Toby says he doesn’t think he will be wanted there by someone to this. Is this his future ex-wife Kate he’s talking about? Could it be his son Jack, who maybe blames Toby for something relating to his mother? Hopefully the last two seasons give us some clarity on Tate/Koby/whatever better relationship nickname you can think of.

Who is Kevin’s pregnant fiancé?

A big question since the finale of Season 3 is who will Kevin have a child with in the future? We then meet a litter of different women throughout Season 4 who could be potential suiters. We even get a mini flash forward to the Big Three’s 40th birthday in the mid-season finale, at which point Kevin has a fiancé who is pregnant. The finale then gave us Kate’s friend Madison telling Kevin that she is pregnant to him, all thanks to a one night stand earlier in the season.

After that recap, it all seems too easy to skip to the Big Three’s 40th birthday and find out Kevin has now proposed to Madison. Although Season 4 ended with Kevin promising he is ready to be a father to their children, there is no specific commitment to Madison. With how Fogleman opens up each Season, we’re definitely in for a twist. One of them maybe being that Kevin has actually got someone else pregnant as well? Maybe his ex-wife Sophie? Could it be recovering alcoholic Cassidy (we did happen to get a quick shot of in the Season 4 finale)? Maybe even the weird lady who Kevin got John Legend to sing for her. Either way, it doesn’t seem normal to have Madison as that pregnant fiancé in the Pearson’s cabin.

How did Miguel and Rebecca get together?

Something everyone has been pondering since the second episode ever of the show…and we still have no answers almost five years later! Somewhere between the Big Three going to college and the same trio hitting the age of 36, Miguel and Rebecca started seeing each other more frequently, which turned into dating, which then turned into marriage. We can imagine it will not have been an easy road, what with Miguel being Jack’s best friend for years until his death.

Most fans are waiting with baited breath to see how their specific story unfolds, and with only two seasons of the show left, surely we’ll be getting answers soon?

Where is Miguel in the flash forward?

A noticeable absence from the flash forward. Something big from when the flash forward story first shown us an old Rebecca was Miguel was not at her bedside. Instead we found Jack’s strained brother, Nicky. Surely Miguel would be at her side when she is in such a bad way?

Everything is pointing to something happening to Rebecca’s second husband. Whether it be him leaving due to not being able to deal with Rebecca’s recent Dementia diagnosis, or his own demise (which would make Rebecca’s Dementia story more painful to watch), or something else – something is stopping good old Miguel from being present. Hopefully, we get to see why before the show’s final bow.

Who is Nicky married to in the flash forward?

The existence of Jack’s brother was a major twist (multiple times somehow) throughout the show. Since meeting him he has gone from angry, alcohol hermit to someone happy to have some form of connection with the family he has missed out on since cutting ties with Jack. So to our surprise, we see Nicky at Rebecca’s beside in the future. He looks well groomed, he looks a lot more heartfelt than we’re used to and he’s even apparently tied the knot by the looks of his wedding ring.

So, who is the lucky lady? Is it someone we’re yet to meet in the show? Is it Cassidy, who he’s appeared to build a strong connection with (hey, it could happen)? Maybe Rebecca’s Dementia has her believing Nicky is Jack and so he wears the ring to keep up appearances? Again, the next two seasons should give us some answers.

How will Kevin and Randall reconcile?

The backend of Season 4 had everyone waiting for a big falling out between the two Pearson brothers after it being teased in the season’s mid season finale. It is fair to say that things said by them both will not be easy to go back on from when they finally came to blows. So, with the two dealing with their mother’s declining health, how will they make amends?

We know from the flash forward that these brothers will at some point fix things…or will they? We only see Kevin giving Randall a comforting hand on his shoulder: does that necessarily mean everything is okay between them by this point? It would be an interesting if we never seen them enjoy each other’s company again.

We’re just weeks away from a fifth year of watching the Pearsons get through life…in multiple points of their lives. So, will we get answers to any of these questions this year? Heres hoping!
