Moonlight’s Barry Jenkins is set to direct

Looks like the prequel to The Lion King is moving along swiftly. Deadline has reported that actors Aaron Pierre and Kelvin Harrison Jr. have been cast as younger versions of Mufasa and Scar. Director Barry Jenkins is also listed as the man bringing the film to life, with help from 2019’s Lion King screenwriter Jeff Nathanson back on writing duties.

The story is said to be centred on the mythology of the iconic characters whilst touching on Mufasa’s origins. It is also worth noting that though Harrison Jr. is playing Scar, the character is named “Take”. Could we also find out how he earned his nickname?

Pierre is probably best known for his appearances in the likes of Syfy’s Krypton and Amazon Prime’s The Underground Railroad (which Barry Jenkins created and directed). He was more recently seen in M. Night Shyamalan’s Old.

Harrison Jr. work includes 12 Years a Slave, The Wolf Hour and The Trial of the Chicago 7. He will also be seen portraying musician B. B. King in next year’s Elvis alongside Austin Butler and Tom Hanks, respectively.

Jenkins’ work includes the Oscar-winning Moonlight and If Beale Street Could Talk.

The film will be live-action like it’s 2019 predecessor and will use photorealistic animation technology also.

The Jungle Book‘s Jon Favreau brought The Lion King to the world of live-action in 2019, bringing James Earl Jones back to voice Mufasa and adding Chiwetel Ejiofor in as the voice of Scar.

The untitled Lion King prequel currently has no release date.
