Fan-Cast: Live-Action Hunchback of Notre Dame

“The fan-cast of Notre Dame!”

Disney is hard at work spinning out live-action adaptations of some of their animated classics, having already released the likes of The Lion King, Aladdin & Dumbo. Recently, there have been rumblings of a Hunchback of Notre Dame being in development to have more of realistic touch.

In light of this, we at ScreenHeads have put together a fan-cast that we think would be ideal for the film’s characters. Have a read and see what you think!

Josh Gad as Quasimodo

Victoria Justice as Esmerelda

Jonathan Groff as Captain Phoebus

Peter Capaldi as Judge Claude Frollo

Patrick Stewart, Adam Sandler & M. Emmet Walsh as Victor, Hugo & Laverne

Lin-Manuel Miranda as Clopin Trouillefou

  1. Here’s Mine.

    Christy Carlson Romano as Esmeralda.
    Nicholas Hoult as Quasimodo.
Armie Hammer as Phoebus Gringoire (Gringoire is his last name).
    Sacha Baron Cohen as Clopin.
Bryan Cranston as Victor, Jason Alexander as Hugo, Sussie Essman as Laverne.
    Terence Stamp as The Archdeacon.
Alan Rickman as Judge Claude Frollo (R.I.P. I can dream. Can’t I?).

    1. Also:

      Directed By David Fincher.

      Produced By Guilmero Del Toro.

      Screenplay by James Lapine.

Rated PG-13: Intense Violence, Frightening Images, Language and Sexual Themes.

  2. I just can’t see Gad as Quasi, not because he’s a bad actor (because he’s not), but because he just hasn’t shown the ability to portray such a tragic character like Quasimodo who let’s face it, is not one that should ever be made funny, where the only humor we see is him trying to cope with the horrors of being imprisoned his whole life while being afraid of how society would perceive him, where he created fictional characters just so he could have some form of companionship. So with that, my cast list would be:

    Quasimodo: Eddie Redmayne
Frollo: Charles Dance (Seriously, he has the voice, and his portrayal as Tywin Lannister is legit on par with Frollo)
Esmerelda: Maybe China Anne McClain or Zandeya (can’t have someone too old due to how Esmeralda and Pheobos are in their late teens to young adulthood)
Pheobos: Nicholas Hamilton (I don’t know many teen actors, and the ones I thought of were WAY too old or too young, so I just went with an actor within a young enough age range who could pull off the look).
Cloppin isn’t a big enough character, so I don’t think it matters too much who plays him as long as it’s someone who can sing and pull off humor.
The Gargoyles: This is difficult due to how they should be a lot less present and should instead be used only to try and reduce some of the intense moments when needed, so with that, I’d go with Patrick Stewart, Bill Hader, and John Clease, all of who are more than capable of pulling off comedy without coming off too obnoxious and can actually make the gargoyles funny.
With Josh Gadd, I’d honestly give him the role of the Arch Deacon or a priest, one that gives him some screen time for sure, and a role that works much better within his wheelhouse.

  3. Who ever plays Quasimodo must have these qualities,Young(20 years old) a red head, powerfully built, and very iportant ( Victor Hugo makes a great point of this in the book),tremendous physical strength. It’s his compensation for so many deformities, and also needed for everything he does in the story like toss a man 10 paces in to the crowd ,knock out 2 guards to rescue Esmeralda and single handedly defend Notre Dame against the Vagabonds! Casting for Quasi in the past have been wrong, except maybe 1956 Anthony Quinn, who is believable having played a strong man in “La Strada”, So don’t cast anyone “small”,short, etc! I say look for an unknown actor ..
