Matt Smith’s 5 Best Performances | ScreenHeads

His accolades include 2 National Television Awards, 1 Emmy nomination and 1 BAFTA nomination

At the age of just 26, Matt Smith blasted onto our screens as the Eleventh Doctor. Since then, his career has not looked back.

He’s played aliens, vampires, royalty, and even more royalty. Aside from that, there are many more types of characters in his 15 years in the limelight. The real question is, which are his best roles?

Let’s give our spin on things, shall we?

5. Daemon Targaryen in House of the Dragon (2022)

It doesn’t get as different as this for him. In the prequel series for Game of Thrones, Smith portrays Daemon Targaryen, the man edged from claiming the Iron Throne.

Formidable, unapologetic and fierce. Smith really gets to sink his teeth into a layered role with this character, who is still due to play in the show’s upcoming third season. Daemon started out his time on the show looking like he was going to be quite the villain. But instead, he has grown to become quite the fan favourite.

Smith actually sought out Game of Thrones alumni Emelia Clarke for advice in entering the world of the Seven Kingdoms.

4. Lucien “Milo” Morbius in Morbius (2022)

Another Doctor in the world of Marvel. It was bound to happen at some point. Milo was the best friend and brother-figure to Jared Leto’s titular character, Michael Morris. Both shared similar physical afflictions and yearned for a cure.

For a Marvel movie that was pretty low in standards, it is safe to say that Smith was one of the bigger highlights of the movie. Not only was it cool to see him play an all out villain, but the desperation and charisma that be brought to the role was one of a kind.

The actor was given some encouragement to take this role by friend and ex-Doctor Who cast mate, Karen Gillan, due to her enjoyable experiences in the MCU as Nebula.

3. Jack in Last Night in Soho (2021)

We’re headed back to the 60s for this next role. The movie Last Night in Soho gave us a slightly sinister Smith as he portrays Jack, a charming, mysterious and sinister man who strikes up a relationship with Anya Taylor-Joy’s character Sandie.

Smith, much like his role in Morbius, got chance to have some swagger and really stretch his villain muscles as he appeared rough around the edges but had a nice twist to his character’s ending.

This role brought the actor back on screen with Dame Diana Rigg after appearing with the actress in an episode of Doctor Who.

2. Prince Philip in The Crown (2016-2017)

All bow down for the first Prince Phillip. Smith portrayed the now-deceased Prince of England in the first two seasons of The Crown, chronicling the first chapter of Phillips’ relationship with Queen Elizabeth II, portrayed by Claire Foy.

Although this could have been a very wooden performance, Smith gave quite a lot of gravitas to the role and gave a very interesting look behind the curtain as we watched the prince struggle with being second in command to his wife and struggling with the likes of fatherhood.

Smith never had chance to actually meet Prince Phillip whilst he was alive, and it was believed that the member of the Royal family never gave the show a watch.

1. The Eleventh Doctor in Doctor Who (2010-2013)

Come on. It was always going to be this. Yes, the top spot goes to the role that put Matt Smith on the map. The Eleventh Doctor.

Smith portrayed the youngest version of the character to date, and lasted in the role until his departure in 2013. With his floppy hair, nerdy approach and alien portrayal, he acted a worthy successor to David Tennant despite the initial doubt from fans.

It was actually Smith who’s idea it was to add an iconic piece of the character’s costume. The bow tie. Production was hesitant at first but in putting it on, the costume was deemed complete.
