Obi-Wan Kenobi: What Should We Get From The Disney+ Series?

Obi-Wan Kenobi: What Should We Get From The Disney+ Series? | ScreenHeads

Here’s a chance to get a very different Obi-Wan

After Disney’s Investor Day news, one of the biggest highlights from Lucasfilm was further news of the Obi-Wan-centric Disney+ show. Not only did we discover that the show is officially titled simply Obi-Wan Kenobi, but there’s more; we learned it will be set 10 years after Revenge of the Sith and will feature Hayden Christensen’s Darth Vader.

With all of the excitement, we’ve got some theories and thoughts for what should go on in the upcoming limited series. Read below to see what we at ScreenHeads think is logical to be featured.

A traumatised Obi-Wan

As you would imagine, the events of ROTS will have left Kenobi in tatters. His fellow jedi have been wiped out and it’s all down to his friend/apprentice/brother turning to the dark side. It isn’t wild to expect Obi-Wan will feel responsible for the actions Anakin Skywalker took. He was responsible for everything Skywalker knows about the force.

It would be interesting to see Obi-Wan as a down-trodden, isolated man when we first meet him again. The series could lead him to find hope again and become more of the Kenobi we get from Alec Guinness.

Obi-Wan going off planet

Though we know Kenobi is based on Tatooine between ROTS and A New Hope, surely that isn’t solely where his adventures will be set? There’s only so much action that could take place on the sand planet. Plus, nine years later Luke Skywalker only views Kenobi as an old hermit; wouldn’t it seem strange for him to get up to so much on the same planet and Luke not get wind of it? Speaking of a young Luke…

A young Luke Skywalker

This is probably something that fans are most excited for – a 10 year old version of Luke Skywalker. It would be fun for viewers to get a peek at the young, naive dreamer and future powerful Jedi.

We shouldn’t expect much from the character as it is assumed that Kenobi and Luke only exchange pleasantries before ANH. But, maybe some moments of Obi-Wan watching over the young boy from a far? Maybe trying to interact with him properly? Which is where our next point comes in…

A protective Uncle Owen

There’s a lot to hint about Owen Lars’ thoughts on Obi-Wan Kenobi. ANH has him dismissing the man when Luke talks about him. The comic books featuring him having crossed words with Kenobi. There is also the slight hint of dislike in ROTS when Aunt Beru greets Obi-Wan when he brings baby Luke. Owen stands away looking off at the twin suns of Tatooine.

It would be great to have the character (and hopefully Joel Edgerton) back having some icy moments with Kenobi, which could further fuel his loss of faith since the events of Anakin Skywalker’s “death”.

A cameo from Qui-Gon Jinn

Probably less likely to happen, physically at least, but there’s potential. The final scene between Yoda and Kenobi in ROTS has the former saying he will teach the latter how to communicate with force ghosts. More specifically his old master, Qui-Gon Jinn.

With this hanging thread, it’d be great having Neeson back with McGregor for the first time since The Phantom Menace. We could even have Obi-Wan failing to communicate due to his attitude (like Luke in The Last Jedi?). It mightn’t be until the final episode that he becomes wise/powerful enough to achieve a Jedi Zoom call with his deceased master.

No physical meeting between Kenobi and Vader

Some fans are probably very excited at the prospect of a rematch between Obi-Wan and his ex-apprentice. However, it unfortunately would mess with the continuity.

When the two lock eyes once again in ANH, it is very much the atmosphere that this is the first time they’ve seen each other in 19 years. To have them meet again beforehand would diminish this effect. Our thoughts on what should happen? Obi-Wan should be plagued by dreams or visions of his old apprentice. A dark reminder of his failure as both a master and a friend. This would tie in brilliantly to the idea of the jedi master being in a depressive state when we first see him. These could be great ways of having the two foes facing off without actually coming face to face in reality.

This could run throughout the series until in the final episode Obi-Wan tells this embodiment of his former apprentice that he is not to blame for his downfall and he will not blame himself anymore (or something along those lines). From there, we get a wiser and more powerful than ever Obi-Wan Kenobi which would lead us nicely to the Guinness version we get in ANH.
