The Baftas will also be rescheduled for a later date.

The effects of the Coronavirus have now stretched into 2021 by causing The Academy Awards to be pushed from 28 February to 25 April. The Baftas have also been given the same treatment, being pushed back to 11 April.

An Academy member told Variety “This is a much needed boost for those films who may have been stalled in post-production.”

The pandemic also caused The Academy of Motion pictures Arts and Sciences to slightly bend the rules of qualifying for consideration; films that debut on streaming or video on demand services will be eligible to enter. Beforehand, films had to be released in a Los Angeles cinema for at least a week.

The qualifying release deadline has been pushed back also, moving from 31 December to 28 February. At least we’re getting a wider selection for the Academy to choose from when it comes to nominations! Unfortunately some films pushed back due to the pandemic will not qualify for nominations, such as Jared Leto’s Morbius: The Living Vampire (pushed back from 10 July, 2020 to March 19, 2021), Sopranos prequel The Many Saints of Newark (pushed back from 25 September, 2020 to 12 March, 2021) and Fast and Furious 9 (pushed back from 22 May, 2020 to 2 April, 2021).

Nominations for next year’s Oscars will be announced 15 March, 2021.
