Our Top 10 DCEU Characters

Our Top 10 DCEU Characters | ScreenHeads

Who are the best characters to watch?

Since the DCEU started up in 2013 with Man of Steel, we’ve been introduced to a number of colourful characters. Whether they’re hero or villain, we all have our favourites that we tune in to see. So, who do we consider to be the best ones?

Take a look below and see if you agree!

10. Christopher Smith/Peacemaker

Introduced in The Suicide Squad before landing his own spin-off show, Christopher Smith is an extreme anti-hero. He is willing to do anything to bring peace in his askew vision of what the world should be, no matter how many men, women and children he has to kill for it. His words, not mine.

Dry, self-righteous and unaware of how hysterical he is, there’s no wonder he’s the member of Taskforce X who got a spin-off. John Cena does a good job as this muscle-bound, liberty-loving douchebag.

9. Barry Allen/The Flash

Teased all the way back in Dawn of Justice, we couldn’t wait for the introduction of a cinematic Flash. Ezra Miller’s Barry Allen differs quite a bit from the interpretations of Grant Gustin and John Wesley-Shipp. He’s socially awkward, quick talking (pardon the pun) and makes a habit of saying the wrong thing. Being quite the ball of energy, he’s a unique take on the character and is quite different from other members of the league, so it’s fun to see them interact.

Aside from Justice League, Miller’s Flash has popped up in little minor DC related content. His solo film is also finally getting release later this year.

8. Amanda Waller

The formidable director of A.R.G.U.S and head of the Taskforce X program. Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller is stripped right out of the comics. She’s hardened and shows no mercy for anyone. At all. What a badass. It’s always fun to try and wonder what ends she’ll go to to make sure her Squad does as they’re told.

Fierce, calculating and a no-sh*t policy. No wonder she was brought back for the second take on The Suicide Squad.

7. Digger Harkness/Captain Boomerang

Easily one of the best parts of 2016’s ill-fated Suicide Squad. Digger Harkness aka Captain Boomerang is an Aussie who has good skills with…well…boomerangs. He makes it of his first appearance alive thankfully, but unfortunately doesn’t last very long in 2021’s The Suicide Squad. Probably James Gunn’s only mistake.

Some of his standout lines? “Hey what about that crap on your face, does it wash off?” and “ten years off a triple life sentence!?”. Boomer, we’ll miss you.

6. Princess Diana/Wonder Woman

One of the strongest characters to enter this universe. Gal Gadot plays the princess of Themiscyra, Diana. From watching her naive yet powerful introduction in her first solo film, we watch as she becomes the almighty, hardened Wonder Woman from then on. Gadot has played the character’s journey beautifully, and really done justice to what she represents in the DCEU.

The (current) only female member of the Justice League is now on track for a third solo instalment. And we can’t wait!

5. Polka-Dot Man

Yep. A year ago you probably would be scratching your head on why this character is so high up. Polka-Dot Man is a misunderstood villain who transmitted a trans-dimensional disease due to his mother’s experiments at Star Labs.

A ridiculous character from the comics for sure, but James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad turned him in a new direction and made us see him as more of the victim of his abilities, not the abuser. Unfortunately, it’s likely we won’t see him again. Darn shame as it would have been good to see him fully grow to be more confident and a, his words, “fu**ing superhero”.

4. Lex Luthor

A very different take on Superman’s arch nemesis. Jesse Eisenberg portrays Alexander “Lex” Luthor as a quick talking, psychotic sociopath as opposed to the swarve businessman we used to seeing. Both interesting and terrifying to watch, the DCEU’s Luthor will go to any length to achieve what he wants and prove those more powerful than the modern man cannot be as clean cut as they appear.

Again, this is likely an incarnation we won’t see anymore moving forward, but it would be cool to see him pick up even a cameo as a now-bald villain.

3. Arthur Curry/Aquaman

Yeah, the DCEU likes tossing characters on their heads. But, they tend to work, with this being the prime example if you ask me. Gone is the blonde, traditional pretty boy look of Arthur Curry when he comes in the shape of Jason Momoa.

Rugged, tattoo’d and grumpy a lot of the time. Momoa broke the character away from the usual stereotypes and made him a lot more of a worthy superhero for the big screen. The direction this version was taken in also came with a lot of depth, in that Arthur is dismissive of his birthright and is reluctant to embrace his destiny in the depths of the ocean.

With a second instalment on it’s way this year, we can’t wait to see how this hero develops further as the king of Atlantas.

2. Bruce Wayne/Batman

The majority of fans were nay sayers when this take on Bruce Wayne was cast. Then came the character details, then the set photos, then the first official still…then the film. It wasn’t the strongest film to introduce him in, but Ben Affleck’s Caped Crusader stands out as the best part of Dawn of Justice.

For the first time we get a jaded, murky Batman who is disgruntled due to his experiences after two decades of crime-fighting in Gotham City.

His arc will hopefully be somehow completed in this year’s The Flash which will act as Affleck’s final turn as the character. But, so far it’s been fun to watch him regain faith in humanity and play alongside other superpose on the big screen.

1. Harley Quinn

Who else was going to be in the top spot? Really? Margot Robbie’s Harleen Quinzel/Harley Quinn has consistently been a big fan favourite in every one of her film appearances. Nutty, hysterical and also emotional (in many ways), we’ve watched Quinn go through a lot, and she’s always come out on top.

There’s currently no word on if she is appearing in any future projects, but we can guess that it’s a sure bet she’ll be sticking around like Momoa’s Aquaman and Gadot’s Wonder Woman.

She’s so unpredictable, and is a thrill to watch. Dare I say it, let’s get her back on screen with Jared Leto and see what happens!
