Rick Cosnett for Multiple Appearances in The Flash Season 8
He was last seen in Season 3
Flash fans are in for a big reunion when it returns after it’s current hiatus. It is known that Rick Cosnett’s Eddie Thawne will return after half a decade off the show. However, it will be beyond a singular episode. The show’s midseason premiere, “Impulsive Excessive Disorder”, will see Bart and Nora West-Allen travelling back through their father’s timeline. This will which will bring them into contact with Thawne. This was expected to be his only appearance, however Deadline have now revealed that Cosnett is signed on for at least three episodes.
Cosnett featured as a series regular in the show’s first season, but in a surprise twist was killed off in the final episode when he shoots himself. This was to prevent his descendant, the villainous Eobard Thawne/Reverse Flash, from being born. Since then, he had guest appearances in the next two seasons, but has since not been seen. Thawne was always seen as a red herring for the true identity of Reverse Flash during the freshman season. To everyone’s surprise, he broke the stereotype of the love rival in that he was a good guy up to the end of his run.

Showrunner Eric Wallace had this to say on the return of Eddie Thawne:
Rick’s been such a fantastic part of our Flash family since S1. And we have been looking for ways to bring him back to the show ever since. ortunately, we’ve been able to do so now in Season 8. And Rick has been fantastic in bringing an exciting new side to his portrayal of Eddie Thawne that honors the character’s past but also takes it somewhere unexpected.
Wallace has not spoken out on exactly how Cosnett will return, but it is believed that he will embody various characters. Could we finally see him go down the villainous route? Maybe under the guise of Cobalt Blue or even a new Reverse Flash? Fans will know that Thawne was the love interest of Iris West, and was always somewhat suspicious of hers and Barry’s connection. Could coming to the present day and finding them married push him over the edge?
It is also being reported that Cosnett could even return for episodes in Season 9. This now seems more likely seeings as show lead Grant Gustin has apparently signed a deal for a new season. This will apparently be comprised of a slightly smaller 15 episode run.
The Flash returns March 9 on the CW.
