In the months since Ben Affleck’s official retirement from playing Bruce Wayne/Batman, fans everywhere have been waiting patiently for news of who will don the cape and cowl next. Well, DC fans, we finally have word! The Twilight franchise’s Robert Pattinson has officially been cast as the new Batman for Matt Reeves’ 2021 film, The Batman.

There have been rumblings for over a week that Pattinson was at the top of a shortlist for the role alongside Tolkien‘s Nicholas Hoult. Now, we finally have the word that Pattinson will be the next man taking up residence at Wayne Manor.

Matt Reeves even took to social media to subtly confirm the news of Pattinson’s casting as the new Batman for Warner Bros.:

Affleck was set to direct and star in The Batman with DC villain, Deathstroke, set to appear – being portrayed by Joe Manganiello. Before long, Affleck had dropped out as director and all was quiet on whether or not the actor was staying on in the coveted role.

Little is known about the film so far but rumours are circulating that it will be a point-of-view detective story that has The Caped Crusader trying to uncover the truth of a murder in Gotham City. This story will supposedly feature at least six of Batman’s biggest villains including Catwoman and The Penguin.

In terms of other cast members joining Pattinson as the new Batman incarnation, it is rumoured that Richard E. Grant is being eyed to play Alfred Pennyworth whilst Vanessa Hudgens is being shortlisted to play Selina Kyle/Catwoman.

The Batman is due for release June 25 2021.
