The Batman – Teaser Trailer Breakdown

The Batman Teaser Trailer Breakdown | ScreenHeads

“I’m Vengeance.”

DC Fandome has garnered a lot of praise for the content it gave yesterday (August 22). More so for finally revealing some footage of the highly anticipated reboot of the dark knight’s story, The Batman.

Director Matt Reeves showed up to give insight into his vision for the film, also answering some fan questions. Not only that, he still had something to show fans in spite of only having 25% of the film produced due to the Covid-19 halting production. Let’s just say – if this is a small portion of just 25%, we can’t wait to see the full product.

We at ScreenHeads have gone through the amazing footage to give you some breakdown information that you might have missed. Have a read and see if you caught these points too.

Edward Nashton/The Riddler

We open with a shot of a heavily masked Edward Nashton, played by 12 Years A Slave‘s Paul Dano. Is anyone else getting a Zodiac Killer vibe here?

There’s A Murder Afoot

The Riddler is known for leaving behind a puzzle in his crime scenes no matter how you depict him. Here we have our presumed first victim with a plastic bag taped to his head. On it reads ‘NO MORE LIES’ in red lettering.

Matt Reeves has spoken about how the film delves into the deep corruption of Gotham City. Is The Riddler a product of this corruption and is looking to reveal all? Through a slow, deadly game of cat and mouse?

The Batman Is Brought In To Investigate

It appears The Batman is reluctantly being brought in to assist the GCPD from looking at this POV shot. Are we safe in assuming this will be around half way through the film?

Jim Gordon’s On The Case

Our first real look at Jeffrey Wright’s Jim Gordon as he and Batman take a look around the crime scene. The Westworld star seems to be a great fit for the role already!

Riddle Me This…

What more would you expect from The Riddler? At the crime scene a puzzle and code are found. It looks like viewers will be a part of the puzzle during this film – hats off to anyone who cracks to case before our hero does.

Riddler Is Playing Games With The Caped Crusader

It appears that Riddler will want to aim everything directly at The Batman during the film. Is he wanting to make it apparent to all that he is somehow involved? Or is Nashton wanting to just play a sick game with our hero?

A Corrupt Commissioner?

We see a press conference with Gordon present, so we can assume this man who is front a centre is our current Commissioner? Remember, this film is about how Gotham is under corruption, so are we safe to think this guy is at the forefront of that? A balaclava-wearing Bruce is watching this press conference from afar ominously, so it could be that our hero is suspecting him already.

The Batcave

Probably the biggest Batcave to date, right? Bruce motorcycles in toe underbelly of Wayne Manor where his tech awaits him.

The Voice Of A Butler

“You’re becoming quite a celebrity” speaks the recognisable voice of motion-capture king Andy Serkis, though I doubt he’ll be CGI’ing up for his role in the film as Bruce’s faithful butler, Alfred Pennyworth.

Someone Crashes A Funeral…Literally

It looks like Bruce will attend the funeral of the recent murder victim, to which a stray car will burst in, unearthing a innocent civilian with yet another letter for Batman. Does Riddler suspect a member of Gotham’s high society is the caped crusader? Maybe he has already solved the riddle of Batman’s identity and the Waynes are linked in with all of this.

Our First Look At Bruce Wayne

Our first solid look at a young Bruce Wayne, played by powerhouse performer Robert Pattinson.

His black eye doesn’t escape notice – with this film being set in Batman second year of crime fighting, shall we expect him to not walk away with zero marks until later in his vigilante career?

Selina Kyle/Catwoman

Matt Reeves has already revealed that Zoë Kravitz’s Selina Kyle is not actually Catwoman yet. however, it is fair to say the shaping of her ski mask when she is discovered committing a burglary by Batman definitely alludes to her future.

The Batman Takes No Prisoners

From the looks of the pummelling this gang member (whose make-up seems to nod to the Arkham games) gets from our dark knight, this is a Batman who isn’t messing around when it comes to taking down criminals. This is going to be a Batman who crosses the line maybe? Everything is pointing towards our hero learning how to become a better hero throughout the plot.

Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin

I bet it took everyone a couple of viewings to really identify this one. Yes, this is our first look at Colin Farrell’s Oswald ‘Oz’ Cobblepot. Amazing prosthetics and I’m sure an even more amazing performance to go with it. This seems to take place at a depot at Gotham’s docks – could we see Penguin’s plans be foiled by The batman showing up?

The Batman Vs. The GCPD

We could see from the earlier shot that a lot of the GCPD have a bit of a problem with Batman. Whether it’s uncertainty of his intentions, fearing him or not agreeing with his ways of fighting crime, it looks like things are going to break out into a brawl.

Good luck, officers. Good. Luck.

Grappling Away

It was rumoured that the grapple gun wouldn’t appear in the film, but looks like that’s been debunked. We find Batman escaping quite abruptly as GCPD officers watch, their torches pointing at him. Has something in the case led to Batman being involved in the murders? Are we getting a dark scene with the police tailing him in a building where he suddenly makes a break for it? Potentially.

More ‘Grave’ Incidents

We appear to be in the same scene as earlier when Bruce saved someone from the crashing car at the funeral. So, are we going old school with a quick change for Bruce Wayne to suddenly disappear as Batman arrives to save the day? Maybe not ‘saving the day’ from the looks of that explosion.

The civilian with the message for Batman did look like he was hooked up to an explosive. Maybe Bruce switches to Batman to openly disarm it (through answering a puzzle correctly?) and…fails? The flames tell us that at least. Remember, it’s apparent that this is a Batman who will make mistakes and learn from them as he is still pretty much starting out.

The Batmobile Fires Up

We’ve seen behind-the-scene images but nothing compares to actually seeing the bat mobile burst into life with the iconic flame. This iteration is more of a muscle car, so expect some great action sequences when it shows up. Pretty sure we see the batmobile chasing The Penguin so it could appear during a scene down at a seedy Gotham depo.

The Eye Make-Up In All Its Glory

As much as Batman and Robin is critically shunned by fans, it did nod to one big element that just disappears in all other Batman films – the eye make-up that is worn with the mask. I love Batman Returns but that moment where Keaton removes the mask with zero darkness around the eyes is unforgivable. Thankfully, Matt Reeves is taking the costume to a very grounded place by actually showing Pattinson without the mask but still yet to remove the rest of his facial Batman look.

This moment also has some dialogue from Bruce and, we can assume, The Riddler. Everything seems to be tying the Waynes, Batman and Gotham’s corruption together. This should take an interesting turn. As Riddler say’s himself…”you’ll see”.

Pick up on anything else? Disagree with our views on things? Happy that we’ve finally got something from the set of The Batman? Let us know in the comment section below!

The Batman is set to hit cinemas 1 October 2021.
