Thor: Love and Thunder Review – Is the Fourth Instalment the Best?

Gorr gets some real moments to send chills up your spine and be frightened to look at him directly. For such a lighthearted film, he is the perfect juxtapose.
Natalie Portman is great as she returns as Jane Foster. She gets to kick a lot of ass and even gets some of the funniest moments in the film. There’s also the emotional aspect that she and Hemsworth help to add to the story. It’s good to see them both back on screen together. Tessa Thompson is also as fierce as ever as Valkyrie. I wouldn’t say she is as great to watch as previously, but she makes a good addition to the rag tag team all the same. The unexpected highlight is Russell Crowe’s Zeus. Crowe returns to the comic book genre in a much more comedic role and he nails it. He seems to be having fun and it makes us want to see more of him in the future. That little walk he does down the stairs. Hysterical.
The main disappointment when it comes to character is Taika Waititi’s Korg. We had high hopes for this guy, but unfortunately he doesn’t live up to what he brought to Ragnarok. With more screen time, somehow he just under delivers.
The plot itself is easy enough to follow, which is great, plus the pacing is really kept together. Hemsworth teased previously that this is a film that will have you laughing, then crying, then laughing again. There’s no doubt that the film does have that in essence, and when those emotional moments hit they hit. Hard. But at times it can drop the ball on a joke or two. The screaming goats, for example, aren’t funny after the third scream. It just tries too hard to be funny and wacky. It tries too much to be Ragnarok. That hit film hit it’s notes perfectly, but this outing tries to double down on it and it’s a bit overwhelming.
Waititi and co-writer Jennifer Kaytin Robinson should be applauded for how they weaved Jane Foster’s Mighty Thor story into the plot. It holds a lot of heart but also gives us some unexpected laughs which is a nice touch. Our story also doesn’t weigh us down with too much screen time for those rascals The Guardians. They’re around for the perfect amount of time. Quite fleeting really, which allows Thor’s story to truly be his own. Thor’s story all in all, leads to him being in a very unexpected spot. Not an unwelcome one for sure, but definitely one that leaves you wondering where the character could go next.

As we turn out attention fully to director Waititi, we remember that he was given pretty much free rein on this film thanks to Ragnarok‘s success. But, as we’ve mentioned, he’s leaned too much into what made his previous Thor film a success. “X, Y and Z was so well received. Let’s do MORE of that”. Sometimes, that just isn’t the answer. I know this film was been public as a nutty adventure since one before it’s release, but that still doesn’t completely excuse some of it’s negative points.
The Batman‘s Michael Giacchino and An American Pickle‘s Nami Melumad pair up for scoring duties on this flick. Their sounds help to blend in effortlessly with Waititi’s 80’s rock ambience that runs all the way through the tone of this film. It’s maybe not the most memorable score to be quite honest. But, Waititi’s music choices steal the show. Just as Ragnarok uses Led Zeppelin as a through line, this time we have some Guns ‘N’ Roses leading the way and influencing the music. It works well and has you smiling during some of those fight scenes.
For the first time in the MCU, we have a fourth outing for a singular hero. Though it is quite a feat, it shows that this achievement should be exercised lightly for any future character’s that reach this milestone. A lot is riding on this, and it does deliver, just maybe not as much as people expected. We can only hope this character isn’t now going back down the mountain after peaking in his most recent appearances.
On the whole, there’s a lot to be celebrated about this film. Some of it’s cast is phenomenal. Sections of the story really pull you in and are compelling. Waititi’s use of music fits the title character down to a T. It’s just unfortunate that it tries to emphasise some of the things the previous Thor film was praised for. This should have been an animal of it’s own. Some big plot elements aren’t exactly upping the stakes, and some of our supporting characters that get more screen time don’t serve their screen time well.
I expected higher for this. Alas, it was not to be. 7.5/10 from us.
