Thanks to uncontrollable laughter, it didn’t work out so well

Tom Holland may now be known globally as the Spider-Man of the MCU, but beforehand he was auditioning for all sorts. One audition it turns out almost took him to a galaxy far, far away.

During a Q&A with Backstage, Holland revealed that he was up for the role of Finn/FN2187 in The Force Awakens.

I remember my audition for Star Wars, I was like four or five auditions in, and I think I was auditioning for John Boyega’s role. I remember doing this scene with this lady, bless her, and she was just a drone. So I was doing all of this, like, ‘We gotta get back to the ship!’ And she was going, ‘Bleep, bloop bloop, bleep bloop.’ I just couldn’t stop laughing. I found it so funny. And I felt really bad, because she was trying really hard to be a convincing android or drone or whatever they’re called. Yeah, I obviously didn’t get the part. That wasn’t my best moment.

Of course, Boyega was cast and played the role throughout the sequel trilogy. Holland may have missed out at the time, but surely not long after he found himself prepping for the role of Peter Parker in Captain America: Civil War.

Holland’s role as the third cinematic webslinger has propelled him to stardom and given him opportunities such as starring in The Russo Bros.’ upcoming drama Cherry. Whereas Star Wars‘ sequel trilogy…well, maybe Holland had a big sigh of relief.

The third Spider-Man solo outing for the MCU is due out later this year, with rumours surrounding a live-action Spider-verse angle still doing the rounds on the internet. Currently, confirmed new additions include Alfred Milano as Otto Octavius/Doc Ock, Jamie Foxx as Max Dillon/Electro and Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange.

The untitled Spider-Man 3 is due to hit cinemas December 17, 2021.
