Wicked Film Adaptation Finds It’s Glinda And Elphaba
Production begins Summer 2022
Are you prepared for a big screen number of Defying Gravity? the film adaptation of Wicked has finally cast it’s two leads. Pop star Ariana Grande is set to fill the shoes of Glinda whereas Chaos Walking‘s Cynthia Erivo set to play Elphaba, the future Wicked Witch of the West, respectively.
For those not familiar with the storyline of the stage musical, the story follows two witches who form an unlikely friendship but are set on a collision course due to their different views of the goings on in the land of Oz, with the events taking place before and during the story of The Wizard of Oz.

A film adaptation of Wicked as been in the discussion since as early as 2004, with Billy Elliot director Stephen Daldry set to helm the project in 2012. Since then, Daldry has exited the project due to scheduling conflicts, with In The Heights‘ Jon M. Chu taking his place. Winnie Holzman, who penned the musical’s book, will write the screenplay.
With casting of the two leads announced and filming set to begin next Summer, we can expect more casting announcements to follow on quite soon.

The original Wicked stage production was back in 2003, with The Witches’ Kristen Chenoweth playing Glinda and Cinderella’s Idina Menzel as Elphaba respectively.
Since originating on Broadway, the show has gone on to win countless awards and has become one of the most popular stage musicals with productions still running today.

Wicked currently does not have a release date set.
