First trailer for Joker released - ScreenHeads

Joaquin Phoenix could be giving us our darkest Joker yet

October may seem a long way away but its about time that we get some footage of Joaquin Phoenix as the clown prince of crime. Yes, Warner Bros. have finally released the first official Joker trailer for all to see, and its a good’n.

The trailer gives us our first proper look at Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck – a middle aged, mother loving, tortured man who is destined to become the greatest enemy of The Dark Knight himself. Below you can view the new trailer:

Showing Fleck go from therapy, to being victimised and then to finally donning some creepy clown make up to start terrorising Gotham City – this trailer gives a pretty good narrative.

We get little hints here and there of what the plot will entail, but nothing is concrete until more footage is released or even until the film’s release. We do, however, get our first glimpses of our main cast. We see Zazie Beetz as Fleck’s love interest Sophie Dumond, plus Frances Conroy as Fleck’s mother and Brett Cullen as Thomas Wayne.

The official premise for Joker reads as: “In 1981, a failed stand-up comedian turns to a life of crime and chaos in Gotham City, slowly rising up to become a frightening legend.

The film is being marketed as a psychological thriller, and if this Joker trailer is anything to go by, it sets that tone. We were promised a new type of original for the DC villain, and it looks like that’s what we’re getting.

Joker‘s current release date stands at October 4 in the US, with a UK release yet to be announced.
