Jon Watts is Developing a Star Wars Series
Out with the Avengers, and in with the Jedi
He may be stepping away from the world of Marvel, but it looks there’s still some franchise energy left in this director. Spider-Mans Jon Watts is officially on board to helm a new series set in the Star Wars universe.
In yesterday’s (May 17) Vanity Fair cover story which covered Star Wars‘ upcoming shows (Obi-Wan Kenobi, Andor, Ahsoka and The Mandalorian‘s third season), it was touched upon about other projects rumbling around. This also including Rain Johnson’s planned trilogy which is currently on hold due to the director’s Knives Out commitments. It was revealed that Watts himself is set to oversee a new series, with Spider-Man: Homecoming‘s Christopher Ford writing.
The show is set to be a coming-of-age story, in the vein of Amblin Entertainment’s films from the 1980s. Amblin is Steven Spielberg’s production company that was responsible for 80s flicks such as E.T, The Goonies and Gremlins. With Watt’s Spider-Man films having nods to John Hughes’ classic teen movies such as The Breakfast Club and Pretty in Pink, it looks like he’s now taking a slightly different angle for inspiration with his own side of a famous franchise.

We also know that the show will be set after Return of the Jedi and in the same time period of The Mandolorian, however the series is yet to have a title. It does have a codename for the time being though: “Grammar Rodeo”. This is a reference to a Simpsons episode in which Bart and his friends all run away from home.
Watts’ time with the Spider-Man franchise was fan-pleasing to say the least. Not only did he fully capture the high school element of Peter Parker’s life, but he also helped in bringing classic Spidey villains, and incarnations, into one big film in the shape of Spider-Man: No Way Home. The director was also set to helm the upcoming Fantastic Four reboot for Marvel Studios, however he has since stepped away from the project. A new director is yet to be announced, but with a special appearance in Doctor Strange 2, it will be interesting to see what the future holds for Marvel’s first family.
Watt’s Star Wars series has no release date set, but Obi-Wan Kenobi hits Disney+ on May 27.
