‘The Flash’ season 6: What do we know?

'The Flash' Season 6: What Do We Know? - ScreenHeads

Expect a fresh suit, a new Wells and a crisis.

In the months since The Flash left our screens for it’s usual Summer hiatus, we have had a lot to ponder over where it is headed next. We usually have a fair few snippets of information on where the show will be taking us – but in the case of The Flash season 6, we have very few details except for the fact that it’s first half is leading to this year’s big annual Arrowverse crossover.

So, what do we know so far? What do we have to go on to make educated guesses for the coming season? We at ScreenHeads have got you covered!

It will begin just MINUTES after season 5’s finale

It looks like the team at The Flash are taking a leaf out of last year’s book. Yes, the opening episode will kick off just after the events of May’s finale. The last we saw of Team Flash, Barry and Iris were viewing a goodbye video from their now non-existent daughter, Nora. Joe was settling in as the new captain of the CCPD. Cisco was enjoying life with his new love. Caitlin was taking a look at her new Killer Frost costume. Ralph was preparing for a new case in his office.

With the sizzle reel we were given at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, it would appear that time has in fact passed. Joe has grown out a bit of a beard. Barry seems to be putting on a pretty brave face seeings as his daughter has just been wiped from existence. Even Cisco is already back in the fold of Star Labs.

Could the opening shots of the season simply lay down some ground work after season 5’s finale, for us to then be treated to a time jump?

Barry’s got a new suit!

What’s a new season of The Flash without the title character getting a new outfit these days? That’s right, The Flash season 6 will see our hero donning yet another suit. As to why Barry will be getting a new costume is yet to be seen, but we are happy I guess?

Season 5’s outfit wasn’t received overly well so it doesn’t really surprise this writer that showrunner Eric Wallace has done a u-turn on the direction of the famous Flash costume. The above image tells us what the body of the suit will look like but not the cowl, however we can assume that the chinstrap is back thanks to a certain newspaper article.

Bloodwork is big bad no.1 of this season

Meet this year’s FIRST (that’s right first, but more on that later) big baddie. The villain is none other than Dr. Ramsey Rosso, known as the terrifying Bloodwork in the comics.

this iteration of the character is played by Heroes alumni Sendil Ramamurthy. Rosso is said to be an old acquaintance of our familiar character Caitlin Snow. Unfortunately, they appear to part ways at some point due to Rosso’s goal: to mess with nature and bring about the end of death itself.

Now, there is the fact he is the villains FIRST villain. The season is bringing us Bloodwork up until AFTER the Crisis on Infinite Earths Arrowverse crossover event. From that point we will get a new villain to see us through to the finale. Can we expect a villain from somewhere else in the multiverse to slip through the cracks of reality and cause trouble for the team at Star Labs? We’ll find out January 2020.

Barry will be made aware of ‘The Crisis’ being brought forward early on

We have known since the show’s pilot episode that a screen adaptation of the Crisis on Infinite Earths comic book storyline was coming. We’ve known that Barry would disappear, but it wasn’t until season 5 that we found out he is in fact gone from that point on for at least 25 years. THEN, the final moments of season 5’s finale shown us that Nora West-Allen’s death actually pushed the events of ‘The Crisis’ from 2024 up to 2019.

We know from this year’s San Diego Comic-Con that Barry will be made aware of his upcoming disappearance thanks to The Monitor, and we have even got a quick look at that very conversation during this year’s sizzle reel.

Cisco Ramon is here to stay! REJOICE!

This is pure evidence that you shouldn’t always listen to the rumours floating around online. Smile, Arrowverse fans; The Flash season 6 will see the return of Carlos Valdes as a series regular once again!

We know from last season that Cisco gave up his powers, and therefore the identity of Vibe. Mix that with the rumours of the character’s departure and you appear to have cement-hard true news. Thankfully, Valdes himself spoke out about this at Comic-Con, proclaiming that he’s going nowhere during this sixth season.

As to what the character’s story will entail this year? We have no clue. On set pictures have shown him back in his Vibe outfit so…who knows!

The Central City Citizen will blossom through season 6

We have been aware of this news outlet since the first season, and last year we got a proper introduction as Iris West-Allen pushed to get her newspaper off the ground.

At this year’s big Comic-Con we discovered that Iris will be hiring employees as the company begins to show real growth and becomes a major part of the show though Iris’ prominent role.

Tom Cavanagh is acting AND directing again this year!

You can never complain about too much Cavanagh, right? His constant returns each season as new and exciting versions of Harrison Wells are what help to keep the show fresh (for now at least – Sherloque felt a tad forced).

This year, the actor will be playing Harrison ‘Aussie’ Wells within a few episodes of this year’s run. He will also play comic book character Pariah, an integral man in the Crisis on Infinite Earths storyline who is forced to watch his Earth be destroyed by The Anti-Monitor.

Not only that though, Cavanagh will also returning to his directing chair on The Flash. He did a splendid job directing episodes from season 3’s The Once and Future Flash to the show’s 100th episode last year, entitled ‘What’s Past is Prologue – so it’s no surprise he has been invited back for another opportunity.

Kid Flash AND Godspeed are returning!

Courtesy of The CW.

The show has tried to ease up on speedsters in the last few seasons (with the exception of XS being introduced last year) and for that reason it is always great to see the return of The Flash’s associates – both good and bad.

Kid Flash has only made guest appearances since the start of season 4, and so another guest spot is long overdue! It will be good to see how Wally West has developed since we last saw him. Could his abilities rival that of The Scarlet Speedster?

The other shock return is Godspeed. This is a character that has been on many a fan’s wish lists for years, so you can imagine the disappointment last season when he was used as a villain of the week to fight Nora West-Allen in the future. The fact that the villain didn’t even cross paths with Barry Allen was annoying for many viewers. However, could that change in The Flash season 6? Godspeed has been seen in set pictures for the opening episode, so could the character get the screen time/story he deserves? We can only pray.

We will see Killer Frost trying to live a life

Courtesy of The CW.

This is a strange one if you ask me, but it makes sense. We have seen Killer Frost go from the unwanted evil persona of Caitlin Frost to a fully fledged member of the team who even has a somewhat interesting relationship with body-roommate Caitlin.

The fact that this year we will see Frost having her own life is quite interesting. Does this mean her own circle of friends? Could she even get a love interest instead of Caitlin as a bit of a twist in the usual narrative? It will be interesting to see how this is handled. It could be used to both comedy and dramatic effects.

Ready or not, the next season of The Flash is approaching fast and it has a lot to unveil to us. To get some more ideas of what is to come yourself, take a look at the sizzle reel that was revealed at Comic-Con in July:

The Flash will return to The CW in The US on October 8, 2019. In The UK, it will air at a later date on Sky One.
