Enter Doctor no. 14?

It looks like we could be setting up for a regeneration scene sooner rather than later.

The Mirror has reported that Jodie Whittaker has quit the role of The Doctor. The actress is said to be exiting at the conclusion of the next series, which is expected to air in the Autumn of this year.

The Broadchurch star apparently wishes to stick to the trend of three stints on the show before departing. She is also said to be wanting to take on other roles. Previous Doctors who left the show after a trio of stints include William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton and Matt Smith.

An insider has been quoted as saying:

It’s all very hush-hush but it is known on set that Jodie is leaving and they are gearing up for a regeneration. Her departure is top secret but at some point over the coming months the arrival of the 14th Doctor will need to be filmed. It’s very exciting.

Whittaker’s departure would follow swiftly after Bradley Walsh and Tosin Cole. The pair left their roles of Graham O’Brien and Ryan Sinclair respectively in this year’s new year special, “Revolution of the Daleks”.

Most notably, Whittaker was the first female to take on the role of the Time Lord. Taking the role in 2017, Whittaker’s first scenes aired in that year’s Christmas special, “Twice Upon a Time”.

Favourites tipped to take on the role of the 14th Doctor include Fleabag‘s Phoebe Waller-Bridge, The IT Crowd‘s Richard Ayoade and Death in Paradise‘s Kris Marshall.

The 13th series is currently in production but is said to be reduced to an eight-episode run. This is down to the situation surrounding Covid-19.

Joining Whittaker’s Doctor and Mandip Gill’s Yasmin “Yaz” Khan will be John Bishop as a character called Dan. His inclusion was announced after the airing of “Revolution of the Daleks”.

In a press release, Bishop had his to say:

If I could tell my younger self that one day I would be asked to step on board the TARDIS, I would never have believed it, it’s an absolute dream come true to be joining Doctor Who and I couldn’t wish for better company than Jodie and Mandip.
