LOTR Prequel Series Gets Title & Plot Details
The series hits Amazon Prime in September
More information has finally been revealed concerning Amazon Prime’s upcoming Lord of the Rings prequel series. Through a swanky no-CGI video announcement, we have our official title for the series. The video uses a voiceover echoing a section of dialogue from the prologue of The Fellowship of the Ring.
Watch below and find out for yourself:
There you have it. The series is officially titled The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. This means that we’ll delve even deeper into the history of Middle Earth. The main focus will be the powerful rings given to the Elves, Dwarves, Men and Dark Lord himself. From there, we’ll watch how they influence the world from then on.
We’ve known for some time that the series would take place quite sometime before the events of both The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings saga, but now we have confirmation of exactly when.
Showrunners JD Payne & Patrick McKay had this to say in a statement when discussing the title announcement:
This is a title that we imagine could live on the spine of a book next to JRR Tolkien’s other classics. The Rings of Power unites all the major stories of Middle-earth’s Second Age. The forging of the rings, the rise of the Dark Lord Sauron, the epic tale of Númenor, and the Last Alliance of Elves and Men. Until now, audiences have only seen on-screen the story of the One Ring – but before there was one, there were many… and we’re excited to share the epic story of them all.

The series has been ordered for multiple seasons, with the first season having already been filmed in New Zealand (much like The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings films). The second season is due to start filming right here in the UK.
The show will feature the likes of Broadchurch‘s Lenny Henry, Jessica Jones‘ Benjamin Walker and Sherlock‘s Charles Edwards. The show will also star Hollyoaks’ Maxim Baldry as Isildur, the man severed the One Ring from Sauron’s hand and then became it’s owner before his death, which left Smeagol/Gollum to be it’s next owner.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is due to stream of Amazon Prime September 2, 2022.
