Predicting…The Rest Of This Is Us Season 5

Predicting...The Rest Of This Is Us Season 5 | ScreenHeads

What events will lead the Pearsons into their sixth season?

With This is Us jumping onto a small hiatus due to Covid-19 production issues, it gives us time to reflect on what Season 5 has given us so far. Knowing how the show functions and given what this season has drip-fed us so far, can we help trying to not predict the rest of the story for this year? No, not really.

Below we’ve throw together our biggest predictions for what the rest of Season 5 will throw at us.

Randall WILL have seen his birth mother during his 5th anniversary break in New Orleans

In our latest episode, “Birth Mother”, Randall finds out everything concerning the woman he believed died within minutes of his life. During the opening when Randall and Beth arrive in New Orleans, they remark about how they were there during their 5th wedding anniversary. Randall can’t believe that he could have walked past his own mother and not even realised it.

In true This is Us fashion, is it possible we’ll get a flashback to this anniversary break and see the two actually cross paths? We know full well that the show doesn’t even need to have them talk to each other to have it give an emotional impact.

Miguel will pass away

Something we have touched on in a previous post. We all know Miguel is getting on a bit in terms of age. We definitely know he doesn’t appear to be around in the flash forwards of his wife Rebecca’s potential deathbed.

If we were to lose a big member of the cast this year, it would make sense for it to be the outsider of the Pearson clan. Enough time has now passed for both viewers and the characters to grapple with Rebecca losing another husband and it would be interesting to see how it effects her with her current dementia storyline.

It has already been reported by Kevin actor Justin Hartley that something will happen this year that will effect every single character. During a conversion with TVLine, Hartley had this to say:

There’s going to be a moment of great significance that happens that will change the course of everyone’s relationship with everyone else. I mean, I’m trying to think of someone who’s not affected by it. Randall, Kate, Kevin for sure, Mom, Miguel, even.

It is possible the actor is being coy by throwing Miguels name in there. Everyone would be effected by his death in some way or another. Kevin may feel a hit for always shunning the man who was once his dad’s best friend and now his stepdad, even though he treated his mother perfectly.

Kate and Toby will adopt

We know full well that that Toby and Kate will adopt a little girl as seen in a flash forward. They’ve even met an expecting woman who is almost pretty much confirmed to be the mother who gives them her baby. Even if we find it to be someone else, I think it’s fair to say that by the time we get to the finale of Season 5, they’ll have everything prepared for them.

One idea that would mix very well into the show? Maybe for one reason or another they don’t get the baby they planned and they find another baby is abandoned and taken to the hospital for safety…a great tie in to how Randall was brought into the Pearson household. Like Toby said, the Pearsons have a great track record with adoption.

Madison will die in child birth

I know, a bit morbid, but it’s This is Us. These kinds of twists can be expected. The promo for the next episode features Kevin racing to be by Madison’s side as she gives birth to their twins. The promo even makes us believe something unfortunate will happen to Kevin. This could be a bait and switch for Kevin actually getting to the hospital and finding out that Madison didn’t make it through the procedure.

After all, no Madison in the flash forwards so far, right? Plus, we know Kevin would never give up on his relationship with her now that there is kids involved. Her sad demise seems like the only way for her to go and it would also give Kevin more and more growth being a single parent.

We’ll see Randall’s life if William and Laurel raised him

The show has really become accustom to episodes centring on Randall and his past or alternative versions of him. If This is Us has the guts to go with this kind of episode for a third time, what better way than to see his life had he been brought up in Philadelphia with the second name Hill and with his birth parents?

It would make for an interesting watch as we’d either see a very different Randall, or we could get a Randall with the same morals as the version we know, symbolising that upbringing doesn’t necessarily define everyone. With the book of finding out where he comes from now finally closed after four and a half years, this seems like the best way to give it a pretty good epilogue.

This is Us Season 5 returns February 2nd with episode 7 entitled “There”.
