What could his second time around look like?

It has been officially announced that Russell T Davies is returning as showrunner and head writer of Doctor Who. The It’s a Sin writer will be re-handling the reigns in 2023 after the departures of current Doctor Jodie Whittaker and current showrunner/head writer Chris Chibnall.

This will see Davies bringing us a new Doctor, new companions plus a new TARDIS. It also puts him back in the head writer seat in time for the show’s big 60th anniversary.

Fans will remember Davies as the man who brought Doctor Who back to our screens in 2005 with Christopher Eccleston as our Time Lord. He then stayed put until his and Tenth Doctor David Tennant’s final episode on New Years Day 2010. This then paved the way for Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor and new head writer Steven Moffat.

Davies had this to say about his return:

I’m beyond excited to be back on my favourite show. But we’re time-travelling too fast, there’s a whole series of Jodie Whittaker’s brilliant Doctor for me to enjoy, with my friend and hero Chris Chibnall at the helm. I’m still a viewer for now.

Chibnall also had the following to say about Davies coming back:

It’s monumentally exciting and fitting that Doctor Who‘s 60th anniversary will see one of Britain’s screenwriting diamonds return home. Russell built the baton that is about to be handed back to him.Doctor Who, the BBC, the screen industry in Wales, and let’s be honest, everyone in the whole world have so many reasons to be Very Excited Indeed about what lies ahead.

Whittaker confirmed her exit from the title role back in July alongside the news of Chibnall also departing. With their final series just around the corner, subtitled Flux, Whittaker will then return for three special episodes in 2022 as her swan song. From there, Davies is back on writing duties.

There is no announcement yet as to who will be piloting the TARDIS next, but names such as Olly Alexander and Lydia West are being tossed around as contenders for the role. Either way, the Fourteenth Doctor isn’t far off. Want to get an idea of who we’d pick? Check out our Doctor Who Fan-Cast.
