“This town will try and make you forget who you are and where you came from…”

Gone is the laugh track and sitcom setting. The first official trailer for the Fresh Prince reboot, Bel-Air, has dropped, and it’s giving us a darker take on the story.

You can watch the trailer below:

Will Smith/Peacock

Much like the original show, the story follows Will Smith, a teen from West Philadelphia (born and raised), who runs into some trouble which forces him to move to Bel-Air with his rich Uncle, Auntie and cousins.

We get a whole host of familiar characters, such as Arrow‘s Adrian Holmes as Uncle Phil and Vampires vs. The Bronx‘s Coco Jones as cousin Hilary. However, there is a much grittier backdrop to this take on the story. From the looks of the trailer, young Will gets in more than just a little scuffle on a basketball court to get him relocating to Los Angeles.

The character of Will is played by singer-songwriter Jabari Banks, whom the original/real-life Will Smith told of the casting over an exciting video call.

Peacock

The show was spawned from a mock trailer made by Morgan Cooper, who reimagined the sitcom series with a more dramatic tone. Smith applauded what Cooper had put together, and by 2020 it was revealed that production on the show had been in the works for over a year. This then Netflix, HBO Max and Peacock all entering a bidding war for the rights. Peacock won and ordered a two-season run for the show with each episode being an hour in length.

Bel-Air is scheduled to be released February 13, 2022.
