Jaime Reyes is coming to the big screen!

One of the oldest comic book superheroes is finally getting a big screen outing. The Wrap has reported that a movie centred on DC Comics character Blue Beetle is in development from DC Films and Warner Bros.

The version we will meet will be the third incarnation, Jaime Reyes. Reyes will be the first Latino character to take centre stage in a comic book adaptation.

The character of Blue Beetle was created back in 1939 by Charles Wojtkowski for Fox Comics. From there, the character has found various homes and had alter ego’s including police officer Dan Garrett and athlete/inventor Ted Kord. DC Comics acquired the character in 1980s with Kord remaining as the character, until 2006 when Mexican-American teenager Reyes took over the mantle.

The origin story for Reyes’ version of the character has him acquiring a mysterious scarab that attaches itself to the youngster’s spine and facilities him with a blue armour that can spout weapons and wings whilst gifting him with super speed and strength.

What makes the news all that bit sweeter is that the film already has a director lined up. Warner Bros. have hired Charm City Kings director Angel Manuel Soto to helm the project.

Soto had this to say about his new project:

It is an honor to direct Blue Beetle, the first Latino superhero film for DC. I want to sincerely thank everyone at Warner Bros. and DC for trusting me to bring Jaime Reyes to life. I can’t wait to make history together.

Blue Beetle currently does not have a release date.
