HBO Cancels The Time Traveler’s Wife Series

HBO Cancels The Time Traveler's Wife Series | ScreenHeads

No more time hopping for Henry then?

Just two weeks after the finale of the debut season aired, it appears that The Time Traveler’s Wife will not get a second season from HBO. Developed by Doctor Who‘s Steven Moffat and The Flash‘s David Nutter, the show ventured into Audrey Niffenegger’s novel. Moffat wrote and adapted the story for TV whereas Nutter was on directing duties for all six episodes.

The cancellation does not come as a huge surprise due to luke warm reactions from both viewers and critics. The show’s fate was announced earlier in July in an official statement via TVLine. The statement can be read below:

Though HBO will not be moving forward with a second season of The Time Traveler’s Wife, it was our privilege to partner with master storytellers Steven Moffat and David Nutter. We are so grateful for their passion, hard work and care for adapting this beloved book. We also thank Theo and Rose, and the rest of our brilliant cast for their heartfelt performances, which completely captivated audiences.

The story followed closely to the source material, with life-long time traveler Henry DeTamble uncontrollably popping to different periods of time where he keeps meeting Clare Abshire, his future wife. Except they keep meeting in the wrong order. The finale of the six-episode run saw us see the out of control transition of Henry and Clare’s wedding day. I guess it works as a limited series in that way then?

The series starred Dual‘s Theo James as Henry and Death on the Nile‘s Rose Leslie as Clare. Living with Yourself‘s Desmin Borges, WandaVision‘s Josh Stamberg and The Haunting of Bly Manor‘s Kate Siegel are including in the show’s supporting cast.

Moffat himself has said, in spite of the show’s cancellation, that there was a road map for where the show could have gone with the source material. But he was keeping tight lipped on big details. You can read his comments below:

I had a plan about how many seasons we’d do — not telling you! — and where each one would end and how far you’d take it. There is enough juice in the book for more than just one [season]. But at the same time, I would still call it a limited series because it can’t go on forever. It has to stop. We already know a fair bit about how it ends. By Episode 3, you know he’s going to get shot in a forest. You know he’s going to lose his feet at some point. So it’s a story of destiny, I guess. The end is built into the beginning.

The Time Traveler’s Wife was previously adapted to the big screen. This adaptation, directed by Robert Schwentke and released in 2009, starred The Dry‘s Eric Bana and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness‘ Rachel McAdams in the lead roles.
