Taron Egerton COULD be The MCU's Wolverine | ScreenHeads

I’d be excited but I’d be apprehensive as well…”

It looks like the same man who brought us Eggsy and our latest version of Robin Hood could be stepping into the MCU. As one of Marvel’s most famous/popular characters no less.

Rocketman star Taron Egerton has addressed rumours that he’s been called up for a Marvel role, and has gave us maybe a little bit of a hint during an interview with The New York Times. Egerton revealed that he has infant spoken to the main team at Marvel Studios, including Kevin Feige.

When pressed on ambitions to be the next James “Logan” Howlett of the big screen, Egerton had this to say:

I don’t think it would be wrong to say that. I’d be excited but I’d be apprehensive as well, because Hugh is so associated with the role that I’d wonder if it’d be very difficult for someone else to do it.

The actor then said the most interesting line of it all when you consider that he’s actually sat down with Marvel:

Hopefully if it does come around, they’ll give me a shot.

The possibility of this is exciting given Egerton’s acting ability. Plus, we at ScreenHeads actually fronted the actor as our top choice for Wolverine in the MCU.

Disney of course acquired Fox and all of the studio’s assets just a few years ago. This gave the MCU access to all Marvel characters that Fox owned, including Wolverine. This accusation was fixed properly for the first time in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness which has Patrick Stewart returning as a version of Professor Charles Xavier, with John Krasinski playing a variant of Reed Richards/Mr Fantastic.

It should be noted that Stewart made the decision to bow out was Xavier alongside Jackman’s Wolverine exit in 2017’s Logan. Does his return to his role show that Jackman could return in some capacity? Maybe. But it shouldn’t be expected that he’d come back as the main Wolverine of the MCU.

Egerton has been a long-time favourite to fill the role, with him denying any involvement until this most recent interview. Guns Akimbo’s Daniel Radcliffe has also been a fan favourite to take the role.

Egerton ironically has starred alongside Jackman in 2016’s Eddie the Eagle, which seen Egerton as the title character and Jackman as his ski jumping coach. Could Jackman maybe teach him in how to handle those famous claws?

The full catalogue of X-Men films can currently be streamed on Disney+.
