The realm of acting royalty has been stung as actor James Caan has sadly passed away. His family confirmed the news on July 7 through the actor’s Twitter account that he had passed on the day before. The below statement was released:

It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Jimmy on the evening of July 6.

The family appreciates the outpouring of love and heartfelt condolences and asks that you continue to respect their privacy during this difficult time.

No specified reason for the actor’s passing has been revealed but it is widely believed that it was of natural causes. An official cause of death is expected to be released to the press in due course.

The actor leaves behind a rich legacy in the world of acting. Caan garnered a whopping 92 credits in film and 18 credits in television. He most recognised roles include Sonny Corleone in the classic Godfather film series, Paul Sheldon in Thriller Misery and Walter Hobbs in Christmas flick Elf. His performance in the former earned him nominations for Actor in a Supporting Role from both the Academy Awards and Golden Globes. Sonny’s death scene in the first Godfather remains one of the most iconic moments in movie history.
